The New Year

Happy New Year everyone!. For 2019, AJ Bear and I prepare for what I believe will be the most emotional experiences of our lives. We are going to Uganda with HEAL International for the opening of the new wing at St Lawrence School in Kagangi – a wing in dedication to the memory of Ayaaz Janmohamed. For those who knew AJ, he was, first and foremost, a brilliant teacher. The wing that is being dedicated is going to be a library and laboratory. I have tears as I think about this- I’m not sure how I will cope when I am actually there -seeing all the beautiful children learning in earnest and watching them, God Willing, be successful with their education and their lives. I wanted to thank everyone who has helped with contributing to this cause – please know that you will all be in my heart as AJ Bear and I travel to see the completion of this project in February. I will also be volunteering in the local hospitals and villages and have been given homework by the CEO of HEAL International to prepare some lectures. So, for now, I’m working away at getting some powerpoint presentations. But the CEO also advised me the power goes off frequently and to prepare the lessons with that in mind. Hmmm- no electricity- chalk and black board? More about that later!

Preparation for the trip is underway- including  getting my vaccinations. So far, I have had 5 of them – 4 more to go. My poor arms! But, I did find a fantastic travel pharmacist by the name of Tazmin Nawla at Clareview Drug Mart on Victoria Trail. (in the event anyone needs travel advice and vaccines). She was even able to secure a full dose of Yellow fever vaccine for me – which is pretty remarkable as there is a worldwide shortage presently. I’ve already sent some patients her way- and she’s a great shot giver.

Happy New Year from AJ Bear and I
