Day 7 South Coast

Our day started with a hike around Skaftafell National Park where we could see the magnificent glacier mountains as well as some more falls including Svartifoss. The air smelt amazing – fresh and crisp.

Our next stop was at Reynisfjara to see the black sandy beaches and the unbelievable striking columns of basalt formations and sneaker waves. You don’t want to go anywhere near the waves- they are incredibly dangerous and tourists have been caught in the sneaker waves and have died.

We then drove to Seljanndfloss and once again saw the vibrant Autumn colors and were even blessed with a rainbow.

Stop over in Hvolsvollur and visit the Lava Centre which has excellent information on Iceland’s volcanoes. I didn’t know that there are 130 volcanoes in Iceland and 30 of them are active. Yikes! Very sobering thought.
