AJ Bear at St Lawrence School

The main reason that I travelled to Uganda was for the opening of the Library and Laboratory at St Lawrence School in memory of AJ. There were at least 150 attendees at the ceremony including students and parents and teachers as well as the rotarians and leaders. The performances by the students – both the songs and the dances -were heartwarming. The gratitude from the community for this marvelous addition to the school was tangible. I felt completely overwhelmed and longed for AJ’s presence until the CEO reminded me that AJ was indeed right there in spirit. And then came the unveiling of the plaque. I honestly don’t have any words to describe that feeling and instead will add many pictures, which I hope will do justice.

I am happy to report that the building is constructed soundly and there was much excitement from all in attendance at seeing this project come to fruition. The students and teachers alike were very thrilled to see the lab supplies, as well as the new books. The anatomy skeleton was definitely the highlight as was evident by the giggles and jokes around the room especially since he came with a name.

A special thank you to all that made this project happen. You know who you are. I was thinking of all of you and wishing that you were by my side and instead had to settle for having you in my heart. The school is located in a picturesque plot of land graciously donated by the Catholic Diocese. It has electricity for the first time, thanks to the solar panels. And there is running water, so the students can at least drink water, after walking upwards of two hours morning and evening to get to the school. But most still cannot afford to bring any food for their lunch. God Willing, this too shall happen in due time.
