Day 6: Eastfjords to Southeast

Iceland really is a country of Fire and Ice.

We started our journey from Seydisfjordur and the weather cooperated initially which allowed us to see the spectacular scenery of the winding road with hairpin bends and many waterfalls along the sides of the road.

We then ventured out to see the Eastfjords. The word “fjourd” translated in English is “inlet”. Initially we had some navigational issues and ended up missing the first couple of fjourds. But we finally managed to get to them and by that time the fog had come down and made it difficult for us to see rugged mountains and whitecaps of the ocean and black sandy beaches . What we did get to see looked similar to the scenery in the Eastern part of Canada.

After the Eastfjourds, we drove to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and were able to witness breathtaking glacier tongues along the sides of the mountains. This is the site where some of the glacier scenes from Batman was filmed. We went on a glacier lagoon cruise in Fjallsarlon which is a smaller lagoon then Jokulsarlon but the view of the glacier is better and you can get closer to the glaciers. I would highly recommend this expedition. We saw beautiful blue glaciers and stunning icebergs that were centuries old. Our captain picked up some small icebergs from the lagoon for us to touch and taste. Glorious! Freshest water I’ve ever tasted.

Next stop was Diamond beach – named because the beach is black and the icebergs that are on it look like diamonds. A walk along the river that meets up with the ocean was filled with beautiful blue icebergs.

Thereafter we made it by nightfall to our campsite near Skaftafell National Park and parked under some clear sky filled with stars and the glacier tongue mountains in front of our camper van.
